The Road
Cormac McCarthy’s book was a little intense to read just before bedtime. Each night I started to read and was mesmerized by the poetry of his words. However, each night, when I stopped reading, I felt a little nauseated by the graphic depictions of his dystopian society.
I find books like The Road haunting, but am also drawn to the way glimmers of humanity pour through the bleakest moments. The love between the man and his son was moving, and almost reminded me of Holocaust-era stories of sacrificing for one’s family. It will be interesting to see how the movie version portrays this story. Part of what kept me reading was the cadence of the lines and the style of dialogue between characters. I hope some of McCarthy’s artful style remains in the tale.
